Welcome to

Grade One French Immersion

May 2013!

- Spring is here and the children have really sprouted! They are bounding about the school yard with basketballs, handballs, and skipping ropes. Please don't forget that extra change of clothes - there are puddles everywhere!

April closed with an afternoon of Scientist in the School. The students rotated through five stations, each exploring a different aspect of our energy study. Scientist Ann did a wonderful job and so did our fantastick helper Moms!!

We will continue to look at the role of the Sun as the initial input in Food Chains, especially in our next science unit, "Living Things"... Here's a great little video of growing seeds. We are conducting an experiment to see if plants need sunlight.

The children are hoping to present their "Trois petits cochons" to parents before the end of this month. This will be a very small, in-class performance, by 2 casts. We'll be sending home an invitation so you can let us know if you are able to attend. I will reminded the children that many Mummies and Daddies will not be able to leave work. Hopefully, we'll be able to capture the shows on video.

In math, we are doing a short unit on mass and capacity. We will soon start an introduction to 2D measurement and geometry: area and symmetry. Perhaps the most interesting part of this unit will be developing skills in giving and following spatial directions. We will need to be very confident of "droite" and "gauche". Here are some ideas to try at home.

In Social Studies, our next community unit will focus on people in our neighbourhood, careers and métiers. Each child will draw and write about what they want to be when they grow up. A careers day is also happening to our newest story heroine, a little "French" girl called Junie B. Jones!

Our last field trip this year will be to Forthythe Farms, here in Markham. This will tie in beautifully with our Living Things unit. The excursion is planned for early June. Parents are welcome to come (but will need to pay admission at the gate).

Hope that both parents and children are having fun exploring the web sites and the games in the links below.
