Spring is here and the
children have really sprouted!
They are bounding about the school yard with basketballs, handballs,
and skipping ropes. There is also a growing Book Group... :-)

May opened with an
afternoon of Scientist in the School. The students rotated through
five stations, each exploring a different aspect of our energy
study. Scientist Anna did a wonderful job and so did our fantastic
helper Moms!! Have
a look at our great afternoon!
We will continue to
look at the role of the Sun as the initial input in Food Chains,
especially in our next science unit, "Living Things"...
Here's
a great little video of growing seeds. At the moment we are
conducting an experiment to see if plants need sunlight.

The children are hoping
to present their "Trois petits cochons" to parents
at about 2:20p.m. on Thurday, May 10th. This will be a very small,
in class performance, by 2 casts. We'll be sending home an invitation
so you can let us know if you are able to attend. I have already
reminded the children that many Mummies and Daddies will not be
able to leave work. Hopefully, we'll be able to capture the shows
on video.

In math, we have started
an introduction to 2D measurement and geometry: area and symmetry.
Perhaps the most interesting part of this unit will be developing
skills in giving and following spatial directions. We will need
to be very confident of "droite" and "gauche".
Here are some ideas
to try at home.
We will then turn
to a short unit on Patterning (extending what we learned in "suites"
last September). Now the children will be able to create, describe,
and grow patterns.

Our last field trip
this year will be to Forthythe Farms, here in Markham. This well
tie in beautifully with our Living Things unit. The excursion
is planned for June 1st. Parents are welcome to come but will
need to pay admission at the gate.
